On the Airbands

Some months ago, I heard a whisper concerning Sydney Airport’s international apron tower which transmits on 122. 3 MHz and is located immediately in front of the international terminal building (ITB).

The rumour. Qantas was going to take over the primary responsibility for all Air Traffic Control movements on this particular apron, relieving the CAA of the duty. Shortly afterwards, Iheard the CAA was keen to talk with Qantas, then. . . all of a sudden, it wasn’t happening! Now, mid 1993, it’s on again! The CAA has decided they don’t want to man the tower. Originally they wanted to turn it over to the FAC, but the FAC hasn’t got the expertise to run it. Qantas has.

So the airline was approached again, and has been asked to take it over. They initially said no to this second approach, but following the Coopers and Lybrand report being completed, their attitude has changed somewhat.
