Saab has commenced structural fatigue testing of a Saab 2000 regional airframe specimen. The fatigue test program for the 2000 is aimed at confirming the type's projected fatigue life. Loads are applied to the test airframe from approximately 50 hydraulic actuators, and by varying the internal cabin pressure to investigate the effects on the aircraft's structure. The Swedish company already has undertaken a Saab 340 test programme which so far has completed more than 160,000 flight cycles. (Saab)

Taaats Contracts Signed:
Contracts between the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the two prospective suppliers of the Australian Advanced Air Traffic System (TAAATS) have been signed, beginning what is referred to as the Specification Development Phase of this controversial programme. Hughes and Thomson are the companies involved, this new round of tendering following the independent review into the TAAATS system held last year. The review recommended the final selection of contractor should be based on an evaluation of detailed specifications and prices from the two shortlisted companies to ensure what is on offer meets the CAA’s requirements.
The companies will deliver draft specifications for reviewin late June and their best and final’ offers 14 weeks later. These will be evaluated using four major criteria: the technical and operational quality of the systems, their cost, the risk and Australian industry participation. The successful tenderer should be announced by the end of the year.
