50 Years Ago . . .

With the Battle of Britain over the focus of attention is shifting to the perils faced by Atlantic convoys as well as the spreading conflicts in the Mediterranean and Africa. The first 16 months of WW2 has seen the sinking of 1,281 British, Allied and neutral ships comprising 4,820,954 tonnes of shipping. From this, U-boats have accounted for 585 vessels, 2,649,031 tonnes, while losing only 32 submarines, a striking imbalance which can only lead to the strangulation of the British Isles. Meanwhile, weather permitting, the German Blitz continues and RAF Bomber Command hits back at targets on the continent.

January 1 – Sicily. The Luftwaffe’s X Fliegerkorps now has 96 bombers and 26 fighters. To defend Malta the RAF has 15 Hurricanes.
