A NZ Fokkers, Safe Air to Go

Air New Zealand staff are suffering the pains of privatisation.

The airline’s decision to axe its faithful old F 27s, which have been used mainly on provincial routes for more than 20 years, will leave 600 employees without jobs. And as if that were not enough, the company then pulled the plug on the airline operations of its wholly owned subsidiary, Safe Air, throwing a further 100 people out of work. SafeAir, which has two Argosys, is basically a freight airline flying not only within New Zealand, but also the important link with the Chatham Islands, 900km east of Lyttelton.
