At a time when the RAAF is taking into inventory some of the most potent hardware that it has ever operated, the Service is also facing a critical manpower problem of unprecedented proportions. To ascertain the background of this problem and to discuss broadly the operational equipment requirements of the future, Australian Aviation’s Managing Editor, Jim Thorn spoke with recently retired ex-Chief of Air Staff Air Marshall Jake Newham.

JT: Certainly the greatest single problem facing the RAAF these days is the immense loss of experienced manpower, said to be running at three to four times the historic average. What moves are afoot to arrest this loss rate?
