On-Board Couriers – A Nineteen Eighties Growth Industry

Seated beside me on the 747 is a young lady busily filling out a pile of documentation. Out of curiosity, I enquire as to precisely what her ‘hobby’ is and it is then and there that one learns first-hand of an entirely new industry – that of the on-board courier.

Prior to the late seventies, the use of on-board couriers was something more akin to a spy novel. The image of the immaculately dressed spy with the black attache case shackled to his wrist has been replaced by a more realistic army of couriers that now can approach one thousand in the air at any one time!

Most people don’t realise such an animal as an on-board courier exists, let alone for what specific purpose. Let us explain further. Certain goods, primarily key machine parts or components, documents, tenders or specialist samples that must reach their destination within the shortest possible time can now be dispatched with confidence through an on-board courier system. Goods can be lodged at the airport courier office up to 90 minutes prior to flight departure or a door-to-door service can be used as an added convenience.
