Battlefield airlifter a USAF niche but a RAAF need?

The United States Air Force has laid out the reasoning behind the planned cancellation of its C-27J acquisition, currently being considered by the RAAF for its battlefield airlifter requirement. It says the aircraft is comparatively expensive and not essential for the current missions, particularly in light of budget cuts and service austerity measures.
In a speech to a US Air Force Association seminar, deputy chief of staff for strategic plans and programs Lieutenant General Christopher Miller said the USAF would make more disciplined use of defence funding following a change in strategic focus.
