The 40,100lb (179kN) st Rolls-Royce RB211-535E4 was certified by the FAA on October 4 for use on the Boeing 757. The first aircraft with these improved engines was delivered to Eastern Airlines on October 10. Eastern has taken delivery previously of 15 Boeing 757s with the 37,400lb (168kN) st RB211-535C.
Cincinnati operator Comair became the second airline to operate the Saab Fairchild 340, when it was put into service on October 1 flying on routes serving Cleveland, Indianapolis, Columbus, Detroit, Louisville and Cincinnati.
