(Left) . The British Aerospace Hawk Has Long Been The Standard Against Which Other High Capability Jet Trainers Have Been Based. The Hawk Has Been Significantly Upgraded To The Dual Seat 100 (Pictured) And Single Seat 200 Standard With A Number Of Changes Aimed Particularly At Improving Its Combat Capabilities. . These Include A Revised Combat Wing With Wingtip Missile Rails For Sidewinder Aams, Cockpit Equipped With Multi Function Displays, Head Up Display And Hotas, And Either Radar Or Forward Looking Infrared And Laser Ranger In The Nose. It Is The Only Aircraft On Offer With Either Radar (The Amx Has A Ranging Radar) Or Flir Which Augurs Well For Its Prospects Should The Adf Decide It Needs Operational Capabilities To Support The Army And Navy. (Right) Should This Not Be The Case, And The Adf Opts For A Trainer That Doesn’t Need Such Advanced Operational Capabilities, The Mb-339 Would Have To Stand A Good Chance Of Securing The Raaf Order. The 339 Has A Proven Track Record And Is In Service With The Rnzaf, Which May Bring The Opportunity For Logistics Savings. (Bae & Aermacchi)

By Tom Muir. With the useful life of the RAAF’s MB-326 jet trainers unlikely to extend beyond the year 2000, the Air Force is taking no chances and wants initial deliveries of its replacement – the proposed Lead-In Fighter Aircraft – to be in service by no later than 1999. And because of the lead times involved in putting into production some of the more likely candidates for the task, the project’s year of decision (YOD) has been brought forward by a year to 1995-96, with September 1996 as the target date for contract signature. Following the release in July of Defence’s industry objectives for the acquisition, the project has now progressed with the release in September of an invitation to register interest (ITR), alerting industry to Air Force’s specific requirements for the new trainer. Project manager W/Cdr Stewart Cameron says the ITR will enable potential suppliers to gauge the suitability (or otherwise) of their designs for the Australian requirement and thus avoid unnecessary expense in proposing noncompliant solutions. More importantly it will enable the project office to assess the capabilities of the candidates – and their solutions – and prepare a shortlist of those to receive the formal request for tender (RFT) document in May or June next year. Cameron says a limited survey of local industry capabilities relevant to the Australian Industry Involvement (AII) requirements of the acquisition is currently underway. The results will be made available to those on the shortlist to help them develop their responses to the RFT.
