Ansett Nz Closer To Blue Skies

Ansett New Zealand is forecasting a big improvement on its $NZ37.2 million loss last year. The airline which took off in 1987 is reported to have lost a total of about $NZ200m. Management will not say however if it is making money for the first time in seven years. Ansett acting chief executive, John Sheridan, says the accounts are “looking a lot better. The aviation market is closely aligned to growth or change in the gross domestic product.” Without revealing details, Mr Sheridan said Ansett had sold thousands of tickets as part of a recent airfare blitz, including $NZ199 return Christchurch/Queenstown ticket, against the normal fare of $500. Ansett New Zealand says it is enjoying better business as the New Zealand economy improves. It is expected that Ansett’s result for this financial year will be announced in late October. The depressed economy and over capacity on domestic routes have been blamed in recent years for Ansett’s financial turbulence.

Aviation Levy Extended

The Government supports a recommendation that aviation levies be extended for another year, says Maurice Williamson, the Minister of Transport. The levies, agreed by the government and the aviation industry last year, provide about 40% of the funding for the Civil Aviation Authority. They include a levy on the major airlines of $NZ2 a passenger trip, one cent a litre on aviation fuel and an annual fee for agricultural aviation operators. Mr Williamson, who used to work for Air New Zealand, says the authority was crucial for the promotion and monitoring of aviation safety; the funding was vital for its performance. He also says the government agrees current levies are not the final solution to the thorny question of long term CAA funding.
