RAAF CFS Aims for Highest Standards
The RAAF’s Central Flying School (CFS) is one of the oldest flying establishments in the world, with a distinguished track record spanning no fewer than eight decades. Australian Aviation recently had the pleasure of visiting CFS and observing the school’s operations, the establishment clearly living up to its reputation.
Central Flying School was established in 1913 at Point Cook in Victoria, then as the training establishment for the Australian Army Air Corps. The site for this establishment was chosen after Duntroon was rejected due to unsuitable terrain and elevation. The first military flight in this country took place on March 1, 1914 when Lt Eric Harrison, a former Bristol Aeroplane Company employee, took to the air in Bristol Boxkite registration CFS3.
During the Second World War, the CFS trained more than 3600 instructors, who in turn trained over 30,000 student pilots. With the end of the war and the winding down of the EATS, CFS relocated yet again, vacating Point Cook to make way for the RAAF College. Its new home was to be East Sale, in rural Victoria. The school relocated in November, 1947, moving its inventory of Tiger Moths, Wirraways, Oxfords, a Lincoln, Dakotas and a Mustang.
