General Electric's GE90 has successfully completed its initial flight testing flying aboard GE's own 747-100 testbed. The GE90 is due to be certificated at 84,700Ib thrust in November, and will enter service in September 1995 (rated at 76,400Ib) with British Airways. Both the PW4084 and GE90 produce almost twice as much thrust as the original 43,500Ib thrust JT9Ds used on both these 747-100s. (P&W & GE)

Delta Trials 727 Winglets:
Delta Air Lines is operating two 727-200s fitted with Valsan designed winglets for a six month trial period to measure improve. ments in fuel burn and performance.
The newly certificated winglets are of composite construction and cost $US450,000. Improvements in fuel burn depends on the amount of time spent at cruise with at least a 4% improvement for short haul airline operations, through to 8% for long range executive aircraft flights. Delta has also reconfigured the flaps on the two trial aircraft, offering further reductions in aircraft drag. Another benefit of the winglets, which are also being tested by a Canadian operator, is an improvement in buffet boundary. This allows quicker climbs to higher initial cruise altitudes due to the wing’s improved efficiency.
