Be Wary of Private Strips – particularly at high elevation!
Have you ever thought you could become an orange and Two hours later they arrived at the airport by car, and the long black fireball off the end of an airstrip?
I have – and it is not a reassuring thought? It all began when I received an invitation from grazier friends on the Northern Tablelands of NSW to visit them for a long weekend. A fellow pilot acquaintance, with his wife and small son, were also invited, so the obvious way to go was by light aeroplane, hired from Bankstown Airport.
Our hosts’ property was the best part of 100 kilometres by road from the nearest “official” aerodrome, but they suggested we could land on an airstrip not far from their home-stead which, they assured us, was “often used” by agricultural aircraft for super spreading.
