The colour photo of the Thorpe T18homebuilt VHAKO at Lord Howe Island in the August issue of AA (p73) sparked the memory of former Trans Oceanic Airways pilot and Cantas Captain, Philip Mathiesen. Captain Mathiesen writes that the registration VHAKD was also held by an ex RAAF Sunderland of Trans Oceanic Always, which coincidentally was the first passenger carrying aircraft to operate from the Rose Bay Blying boat base on Sydney Harbour to Lord Howe with services commencing in 1947. Sunderland VHAKO-was operated alongside four other similar machines, all formerly serving in a transport role with the RAAF's No 40 Squadron during the war. AKO (previously A26-4 in RAAF service and pictured here at Lord Howe) flew to the Island and other points in the airline's network until 1951.
