Australia’s War Diary
50 Years Ago. . .
September 1- New Guinea. Ten aircraft of 4 Squadron move to Tsili Tsili for the forthcoming Lae-Nadzab campaign to support the 7th and 9th Divisions. Each will have four Boomerangs and a Wirraway for reconnaissance, supply dropping, ferrying officers, and strafing. To cover the Australian 9th Division’s convoy approaching Lae, General Kenney, Commander Allied Forces SWPA, concentrates his air strength on Wewak with some raids on airfields in New Britain to render them inactive. In a barge sweep between Cape Archway and Awul, 30 Squadron Beaufighters leave three and a fuel dump burning.
September 2- Australia. No 11 Squadron’s F/O Jim Oliver and crew in Catalina A24-50 set out to plant mines at Sorong, Dutch New Guinea. After refuelling at Groote Eylandt, A24-50 disappears, the first of nine Catalinas lost mine-laying. September 3- Italy. Montgomery’s 8th Army lands in Italy near Reggio. By day’s end Reggio, Catona and San Giovanni are taken.
