Will Bae Sell the ATP Airliner to Moscow?
In what would be a landmark thaw in East/West tensions Aeroflot are to investigate purchasing the British Aerospace ATP airliner. The ATP, a stretched, re-engined and vastly upgraded version of the venerable 748, is due to rollout from its Manchester facility early next year for a first flight in August, 1986. A BAe sales team visited Moscow in late May for discussions with Aeroflot and Russian Trade Commission representatives on possibly co-producing the aircraft in the Soviet Union. The Soviets do not have an aircraft of modern design in the 64-seat class and lack the equivalent engine technology that is available in the Pratt & Whitney PW100 engine that powers the ATP. If a co-production venture should be finalised the US government will have to sanction the sale of the US-built (via Pratt & Whitney Canada) engines.
At present, the ATP (Advanced TurboProp) has not scored an order though this does not concern BAe as it is only early days at present with the new aircraft that will ultimately be many years ahead in customer availability compared with rivals such as a stretched Fokker 50 and the ATR42ST.
