Black Hawk Accidents May Spotlight Stabilator Problem:

A report in the US publication, Helicopter News, highlights a possible stabilator problem with the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk assault helicopter The magazine, quoting official US Army reports, reveals that in 160 incidents the stabilator had failed on 70 occasions. Of particular concern to the DoD was the fact that 34 fatalities have occurred in the past four years in the Black Hawk.

The latest crash occurred on March 13 when a Black Hawk, flying as part of a three-ship element suddenly pitched nose down and crashed for no apparent reason, killing all 12 aboard. Like most of the other accidents, no specific cause could be defined though the pattern was the same with the helo apparently losing pitch control and subsequently diving nose-first into the ground. The report also cited that in those cases where this does occur the aircraft does not always remain right side up. either during its final descent or after the initial ground impact.
