Where Are They?

We apologise to those readers who searched our last issue looking for the TSA-2 story plus the Updates on the FX Fighters and the BAe 146. Lack of space necessitated their return to the hangar at a time when it was too late to alter the cover which bore their inclusion. The FX and 146 Updates appear in this issue as does the TSR-2 story. Ten points to those observant readers who noted that the photo caption on page 83 really belonged on page 88, and vice versa.

What Now for GD?:

General Dynamics may certainly be disappointed in losing out on the NTF order, though to coin a phrase, “you can’t win ’em all”. GD have had much luck in selling their F-16 internationally and barely a month goes by without interest being shown by new potential customers. Locally, GD still have a lot to offer Their man-portable Stinger SAM is a strong contender for the Army Redeye, also a GD product, replacement while all future FFG frigates and many larger RAN ships will carry as a standard fit the extremely effective GD Vulcan Phalanx close-in weapon system. In the long-term, there is also the MRASM, or Medium Range Air to Surface Missile, which is essentially a shortened version of GD’s Tomahawk cruise missile. MRASM has a range in the region of 300/400 nautical miles and operates in the typical ultra-low-level cruise missile flight profile. MRASM is air-launched with the Orion being a prime contender in this regard along with the F-18 and F-111.
