The Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) said while the aircraft would come at a “great cost”, it has the advantage of being able to fire cheaper, short-range weapons.
It’s hoped the aircraft, currently known as “Tempest”, would be ready by 2035 and will, in particular, replace Britain’s fleet of Typhoons.
The P-8 Poseidon is a maritime patrol aircraft used for various roles, including reconnaissance and search and rescue. The Boeing-built aircraft is a military variant initially based on Boeing’s workhorse narrow-body 737 Next Generation.
RAAF crew trained alongside counterparts from the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) last month, engaging in both air and ground-based activities, designed to bolster bilateral defence ties.
The British headquartered company’s CEO, Steve Wadey, said the acquisition further strengthens its long-term strategic partnership with the ADF.
The US is set to purchase 100 of the new stealth bomber, but some analysts had previously suggested the country wouldn’t part with the secrets to the aircraft set to be the talisman of the American military.
