WSI will see up to 10 Jetstar and five Qantas narrow-body aircraft within the first year, operating more than 25,000 flights carrying around four million passengers per annum to destinations including Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
108,000 tonnes of concrete, previously part of runway touchdown zones, is being crushed and repurposed as backfill for 250,000m2 of new airfield to the west of the international terminal rather than being sent away as waste. Auckland Airport is aiming to divert at least 70% of its construction waste away from landfill or disposal.
The airline’s deputy chairman, John Sharp, said it was “as plain as the nose on your face” that the Flying Kangaroo was “cancelling sufficient flights to remain within the 80-20 rule”.
The Histopath clinic at Sydney Airport, which has swabbed more than 500,000 passengers since it opened in December 2020, ceased operations on Tuesday after demand slowed to a trickle.
It comes after the ACCC on Monday argued larger airlines “can exploit” the rules to stifle competition from smaller carriers, while Sydney Airport itself agreed the system doesn’t work.
In a scathing assessment of the domestic industry, the competition watchdog said in general the current duopoly of Virgin and Qantas has resulted in higher airfares and poorer service.
