Newly released figures cited by The Sydney Morning Herald have shown that the government took in $109 million from Sydney’s two airport stations over the past year and a total of $740 million since it began taking an 85 per cent cut of station revenue in 2014.
Reporting in the Newcastle Herald this week claimed that cost overruns on the new international terminal, as well as a drop in passenger volumes and unbudgeted costs for the Astra Aerolab defence and aerospace precinct, have left the airport short of cash.
The financial results came as Perth Airport exceeded its pre-pandemic capacity for the 2023–24 financial year and resolved a long-standing dispute with Qantas over the airline’s move to the Airport Central precinct.
Australia’s largest international gateway saw a total of 10.3 million passengers for the quarter, up 3.3 per cent on the same period in 2023 but still only 92.5 per cent of 2019 levels.
In the Australian Airports Association’s (AAA) submission to the government’s consultation paper, AAA head of policy and advocacy Natalie Heazlewood also warned that the scheme could see its costs passed on to consumers.
September was also a record for Virgin Australia in Melbourne, with the airline carrying more passengers through its largest base at terminal 3 than any other month since it began operating to the city in May 2001.
