Hervey Bay and Roma Airports will be two of 11 to receive Commonwealth funding for essential upgrades under round 4 of the government’s Regional Airports Program.
Hervey Bay Airport will receive just over $230,000 to replace its outdated emergency generator and bolster its perimeter fencing, while Roma Airport will see $1.16 million in funding to upgrade its general aviation apron.

“The Hervey Bay Airport is an essential link for our region, providing essential services for tourism, business, and emergency medical flights,” George Seymour, Mayor of Fraser Coast Regional Council, said.
“This funding will allow Council to replace the aging emergency generator, ensuring the airport remains operational during power outages and severe weather events. Upgrading the security fencing will also strengthen safety and compliance, helping to protect passengers, staff, and aircraft operations.
“These improvements will enhance the airport’s long-term sustainability and ensure it continues to serve our growing community well into the future.”
The grants are among $6 million of Commonwealth investment in Queensland’s regional airports in this round of the program, with other projects including more than $1 million for a fit-for-purpose RFDS patient transfer facility in Gladstone; almost $800,000 for runway, taxiway and apron works at Gympie Aerodrome; and just over $425,000 for lighting upgrades at Stanthorpe Aerodrome.
According to Assistant Minister for Regional Development and Senator for Queensland, Anthony Chisholm, the 11 projects will “make a real difference for communities”.
“Regional airports are critical for a decentralised state like Queensland. They’re a gateway for tourism and help connect locals with the rest of the country,” he said.
The Queensland grants come after the federal government has so far poured more than $17 million into regional airports across NSW, Victoria and Western Australia, also as part of the fourth round of the Regional Airports Program.
Transport Minister Catherine King has said airports are an important lifeline for regional communities.
“We know how vital regional airports are to the communities they service, ensuring access to other towns, to markets, and to vital services such as emergency health care,” Minister King said.
“We’re backing regional communities by backing regional aviation, because we know our regions deserve access to critical services that only aviation can deliver.”
