The Roy Morgan survey, now in its second year, saw consumers turn away from Qantas – last year’s inaugural winner in travel and tourism – for its main rival following a plague of negative headlines for much of 2023, a reputational firestorm that forced the early exit of ex-CEO Alan Joyce.
The joint venture, in place since 2015, will be wound up following signals from the competition watchdog last month that it would not extend its authorisation on the grounds that the deal would provide the “opportunity and incentive to increase prices”.
Rachel Yangoyan, who has been with the national carrier since 2003, recently led the “entry into service” program for Qantas’ fleet renewal, including the Airbus A220 fleet that will replace QantasLink’s ageing Boeing 717 aircraft. The first A220 is due to arrive by the end of this year.
TWU workers have applied to the Fair Work Commission for a Protected Action Ballot (PAB), accusing Virgin and its regional arm Virgin Australia Regional Airways (VARA) of refusing to correct what it describes as “poverty pay, insecure work, and safety issues”.
Subsidiary National Jet Express (NJE) said the new services in Queensland were a result of it winning “several new contracts” and would launch by the end of next month.
The carrier posted a statement on its website hinting it was set to cut the frequency of some under-perming routes, while its local sales manager claimed on LinkedIn that all ANZ staff had been made redundant.
