The service, which launched in June, will end on 10 October, with the Flying Kangaroo saying flights had been operating less than 20 per cent full on average and forward bookings were underperforming expectations for the busy season.

The airport expects Australia to be its top international destination both inbound and outbound over the school holiday period, with other top markets including China, Fiji and the US. The country’s total international capacity is still 9 per cent below 2019.

Announced on Wednesday, the new ten-year Cleaner Fuels Program aims to stimulate investment from the private sector into on-shore production of fuels like SAF, with the first production of “drop-in” cleaner fuels that can serve as direct substitutes in current engines estimated by 2029.

Passengers can now book codeshare tickets through Qantas on Malaysia Airlines flights from Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney to Kuala Lumpur, with domestic Malaysia services to Langkawi, Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching also included.

Pets will be allowed in the cabin on flights between Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast, and Melbourne and the Gold Coast, starting 16 October. The trial will gather insights and feedback from customers until 30 January 2026, before a broader domestic rollout next year.

Qantas is currently conducting a review of the three regional bases with an eye to their potential shuttering, saying staff could be more efficiently utilised at larger bases in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. The union, however, has said this fails to take into account the human cost to workers.
