The importance of knowing your aircraft

The aircraft engineer looked at the maintenance release and scratched his head. A pilot had written up a defect on the aircraft but looking at the MR the engineer had no idea what the problem was or where, if it existed, was it to be found.

As an instructor I have found that on more than one occasion I have pointed out an item on an aircraft and asked the student ‘What is that called?’
