Eurocopter Out of Anzac Project
Eurocopter has announced its withdrawal from the RAN’s project to procure a naval helicopter for the ANZAC frigates and Offshore Patrol Combatants. Eurocopter said it made the decision after “an extensive survey of the technical specification”. Eurocopter’s preparations to bid for the project are understood to have been badly damaged by the crippling general strike in France late last year. The company was planning on offering a development of its AS 565N Panther/Dauphin. Following Sikorsky’s decision not to offer its S-76N for the ANZAC helicopter programme only Kaman (Seasprite) and Westland (Super Lynx) met the March 20 RFT deadline. An in-depth profile of projects SEA 1411 and 1427 will appear in a future issue of AA. Meanwhile by the time these words are read New Zealand is expected to have announced its selection for its similar requirement for a helicopter for its ANZAC and improved Leander frigates. The Super Lynx and Seasprite were both shortlisted for this requirement ahead of the S-76N and Panther.
Cae Wins Black Hawk Sim Contract
CAE Electronics and Australian teaming partner Qantas have been awarded a $38m contract to supply and install a Black Hawk full flight and mission simulator for the Army. The simulator will be installed at the Australian Army Aviation Centre at Oakey and will become operational in mid 1998. The simulator will be used for basic and refresher flying training, as well as training in challenging scenarios and emergency procedures, thus freeing up Black Hawk flying time for operational flying. CAE and Qantas will develop and integrate the simulator in Australia, providing a local through-life support and development base.
