Air India maintenance staff's year-long strike has forced the carrier to reduce its international activities by 20%. Air India has grounded six of its 26 long-haul aircraft for three months to reduce costs while it leases in aircraft to meet flight schedules. Botany Bay DC-3 Overweight
The Bureau of Air Safety Investigation’s report into the ditching of South Pacific Airmotive’s DC-3 VH-EDC into Botany Bay following an engine failure on takeoff in April 1994 found that the aircraft was 562 kg overweight.
The BASI report said that the aircraft’s captain had calculated the DC-3’s takeoff weight for the trip at 11,757 kg (25,986 lb), 127 kg (280 lb) below the aircraft’s max takeoff weight of 11,884 kg (26,200 lb).
