McDonnell Douglas has delivered the first two long-range MD-11ERs to World Airways. The MD-11ER's 7,200 nm (13,340 km) range is a result of minor aerodynamic improvements, weight reduction, greater fuel capacity and a higher max takeoff weight. It can carry an 11,355-liter (3,000 US gal) removable auxiliary fuel tank in the lower cargo compartment. The two World MD-11ERs have initially been leased to Garuda for Haj flights between Jakarta and Saudi Arabia. (MDC)

Fokker Bankrupt
Attempts to find a buyer for Fokker following major shareholder DASA’s decision to withdraw financial support in January have failed, leaving the Dutch manufacturer bankrupt. Production has ceased, leaving thousands out of work and customers with aircraft on order with problems. A340 Super Stretch
Airbus is developing a ‘super stretch’ variant of its A340 long range airliner designed to compete with the Boeing 777-300. As it now stands, the A340-600 would have a lengthened fuselage to accommodate 370 passengers in three classes, a maximum range of 6,700nm (12,400km), the basic A340 wing but with small increases in span and chord, and foreplanes on the forward fuselage which reduce drag by ‘off loading’ the tail. The engine options include an advanced ducted propulsor (ADP) based on the core of the Pratt & Whitney PW2000 turbofan and delivering around 50,000lb (224kN) thrust. P&W’s ADP is due to be tested next year with an advanced, composite nacelle.
