Some Tower and Radar updates for both Tamworthand Darwin. Tamworth, if all goes well, is to receive a new control tower for its airport. The Civil Aviation Authority has made submissions to Tamworth City Council to have building plans approved for the new tower which would be built and ready for occupancy by July 1996. The cost of the project is $4.3m. At the same time, Siemans Plessey Electronics have been awarded a $1.5m contract to install upgraded equipment at Darwin for Air Traffic Radar Control. The new systems will feature full colour monitors, with controllers computer screens interlinked to each other, between the tower and approach control cells.

Telstra Mobile Satellite and Radio Services is currently conducting widespread advertising campaigns to drum up business for its Telstra Skyphone service, providing voice communications for aircraft located anywhere in Australia, whether airborne or on the ground, or up to several thousand kilometres offshore. Utilising the system, aircraft operators can access any telephone service across the world. All aircraft that work through the system, naturally enough, have to have Civil Aviation Authority approved equipment. The service is 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and run from each of the Telstra Maritime stations Australia wide. All aviation monitoring enthusiasts would be aware of course that to listen to these frequencies is illegal, as traffic from them is switched through into the public telephone network, and monitoring these calls breaches the Telecommunications regulations. It’s obvious that if you accidentally stumble on these radiotelephone calls on the HF bands, it is incumbent on you to tune away from the signals.
