A Newcomer To The Show This Year From The Republic Of South Africa Was The Cheetah. Manufactured By Atlas Aviation, This Aircraft Is An Upgrade Of The Mirage Iii. It Is A Multi-mission Aircraft And Its Primary Roles Are Interception, Combat Air Patrol And Ground Attack. Armament Includes Two 30mm Cannons, Air-to-air Missiles As Well As Mk 82 500lb, Mk 83 1000lb And Cluster Bombs. The Cockpit Contains Sophisticated Avionics Comprising A Weapons Delivery And Navigation System (wons), Glass Multi Function Cockpit Display, Radar And Electronic Warfare Systems. The Aircraft Displayed Was A Two Seat Cheetah Dz Operational Trainer.

The clouds of uncertainty were restricted to the skies above the 41st Paris Salon with the unseasonable weather failing to weaken the undeniable atmosphere of enthusiasm and confidence that appears to have finally returned to the West’s aviation industry.
During the life of the nine day event a number of significant orders were announced by several aircraft and engine manufacturers as well as various new sales and marketing alliances. Big winners were Airbus and rival Boeing who managed to clinch major contracts which generated an air of excitement in their respective chalets. Airbus announced that Lufthansa had ordered 20 CFM powered A319s. This makes Lufthansa Airbus’s largest customer with 138 aircraft ordered. In addition Air Canada ordered 10 CFM powered A319s making a total of 35 A319s on order for that carrier. Meanwhile Boeing announced the launch of the 550 seat stretch version of the 777 designated 777-300X with 31 orders worth $US3.1 billion. All Nippon, Cathay Pacific, Korean Air and Thai International are launch customers for this type. Of the 31 orders, 20 are new and the balance either confirmations of options or conversions of earlier 777-200 orders. Saab received an order for 25 more 340s from American Eagle, this time the new 340B Plus which sells for $US9.7 million. American Eagle is Saab’s largest customer and this order will expand its Saab 340 fleet to 141 aircraft. Meanwhile Saab’s military division has formed a strategic alliance with BAe to market and sell its JAS 39 Gripen fighter. Embraer of Brazil concluded a sale of 10 Brasilia aircraft to Skywest Airlines (USA), while Embraer’s first venture into commercial jet aircraft, the 70 seat EMB-145 enters its final phase with rollout due August 18 with 13 firm orders on the books. Fokker won firm orders for a total of 20 aircraft including the new Fokker 70 from at least three undisclosed customers and Bombardier launched the 70 seat de Havilland Dash 8 Series 400 turboprop regional airliner. The flying display introduced some new and interesting aerial performers to Paris such as the amazing X-31A experimental aircraft, the new gutsy Su-35 fighter, the versatile C-17 Globemaster III, the extraordinary A300-600ST Beluga transporter, the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor, the Myasishchev M-55 high altitude research aircraft and several circuits for the incredible B-2 Spirit stealth bomber. Among the static display the spectators were treated to the massive Tu-160 Blackjack bomber come satellite launcher, the controversial Eurofighter (which didn’t fly), the South African Cheetah fighter, the E-8 J-STARS surveillance system, the A330 and A340 family of transports, the 777, the biggest of the twinjets, and many other displays from rocket and missile systems to ultralights and RPUs. In conclusion the 41st Paris Salon reflected the industry’s positive turnaround and will help stimulate much needed future growth. It was a success in anybody’s language.
