Boeing Believes That The Recession Is Over
Strong growth in the Asian and other air freight markets is a key indicator of recovery in the world economy according to Boeing, which says that trends in air cargo tend to indicate wider economic trends. Freight traffic on Asian routes experienced the highest rate of growth (13%) in 1994, exceeding the overall world rate of 12%. Intra-Asia traffic grew the most quickly at 15.1% in 1994 followed by Asia-North America (13.9%), Europe-North America (13.5%), Europe-Asia (13.2%) and US domestic (11.7%). An interesting slower mover was the intra-Europe air freight market which grew by only 3.1% in 1994, perhaps reflecting the shorter distances involved for which rail and road transport can be better suited. Boeing’s 20 year outlook for the air freight industry predicts a 6.6% annual growth rate overall between now and 2014. To handle that volume, nearly 600 more large capacity (over 50 tonnes) aircraft will be required from both new production and conversion sources. With most Boeing 707s and Douglas DC-8s being retired from service by then, the medium sized fleet will also be increased by about 150 aircraft. McDonnell Douglas has also issued an air freight forecast, predicting an annual 7.4% increase in traffic to 2004. The company expects the world freighter fleet to grow by more than one-third by then to 1600 aircraft but says that only about a quarter of that growth will be filled by new aircraft deliveries, the bulk coming from converted passenger aircraft.
