Lost Baggage Que
It was a warm summer’s evening when our last Falcon 900, due to arrive back at around 1800hr, radioed the Duty Crew advising us of their estimated time of arrival and some minor unserviceabilities. Now, because these shifts often last a tiring 18 hours, the crew were understandably happy to finally get to knock off before midnight and busily made plans to see loved ones for around 1900. Everyone on the crew worked extra fast to put the aircraft to bed and were just tidying up the paperwork when the pilot informed them that a minister’s bag was missing and that the Falcon was returning to pick up this important article. Assuming the pilot meant Sydney or somewhere close to Canberra, the crew enthusiastically did their preflight inspections and signed off the maintenance release in record time. As the aircraft taxied from the flight line the crew sergeant informed the crew that they had best cancel their ‘dates’ and get ready for a long night, the Very Important Bag was in Perth, meaning that the airplane wouldn’t be back till around 0300 the next day and even then would need some minor repairs before a scheduled mid morning flight. With wives and girlfriends informed of the predicament the crew settled in for a long night and promptly at 0300 the Falcon 900 returned with a somewhat angry pair of pilots. It seems that someone in Perth located the bag just after the Falcon departed for Canberra and using their initiative put the bag on the next commercial flight to Canberra, and so it arrived at the door of the minister concerned before the empty Falcon 900 had even reached Perth again. And the cost of ‘Operation Retrieve Bag’, a cool $15,000! (Anonymous)
