Raaf Seeking More Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers as Attrition Rate Increases
The Royal Australian Air Force has lifted its sights considerably this year with the objective of recruiting into its ranks more air and ground crew personnel for the years ahead. The emphasis is on maintaining and even increasing pilot and air traffic control personnel numbers. The problems in maintaining the pilot and ATC numbers stem from the fact that the economy is on a hesitant “mend”, not just in Australia, but in other parts of the world. Although perhaps not as much as the optimism expressed at times by national leaders, who tend to go overboard with their rhetoric often not matched by actual performance.
Civil airline routes at times now are being booked at near capacity in many cases, sometimes at overcapacity, both within Australia and in regional and world terms. To meet this demand the airlines have initiated recruiting campaigns designed to lure military pilots to their ranks, with the enticements of better pay and allowances, and big superannuation packages. Shades of the nineteen eighties. And there already is evidence that this is impacting on RAAF pilot numbers. So the Air Force is seeking to graduate 55 pilots this year, instead of the 45 annual rate of recent years. And it is set to maintain the higher graduation numbers over the next few years at least.
