The stunning Piaggio Avanti is quite unlike any other aircraft in the sky today. Combining the biggest possible interior volume with up to nine passenger seats in the most aerodynamically sophisticated fuselage on the tiniest, cleanest, lowest drag wings, it cruises at Mach 0.67 at up to 41,000ft on a pair of 850shp (635kW) PT6s. That’s right, FL 410 and Mach 0.67 from a couple of small turboprops!
It is hard to accept that this swift and elegant machine is not a jet. Comparing it to old-fashioned looking Cheyennes, King Airs, and Caravan Twos, you realise that, as Piaggio’s adverts suggest, the Citation-beating Avanti constitutes a whole new class of its own. Maybe this is the world’s first “execuprop.”
