The story goes that while on final approach to Darwin, a British Airways 747 was told to orbit to avoid a thunder squall crossing its path. The pompous but loyal aviator replied, “my dear chap, do you realise that holding and diverting cost my company thousands of pounds every year?” To which the tower controller replied, “Speedbird 15 roger, in that case can you make $400 worth of left hand orbits.” Little did this controller realise that in future air traffic control instructions would be issued with a price tag.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is investigating new ways to administer aviation charges. According to the CAA, the commercial and political environment in which it operates is continually changing and it’s constantly reviewing its approach to pricing its services. Currently, charges are levied on Avtur burning aircraft depending on the category of operation and the service provided by the CAA, ie: Terminal Navigation charge, En route charge or Rescue and Fire Fighting charge. Piston engine aircraft are charged primarily through an Avgas excise.
