Connecting Australia’s Sunraysia area with Melbourne, western New South Wales, northern Tasmania and South Australia, Qantas regional carrier Southern Australia Airlines has been growing steadily despite economic downturn and at times fierce competition from Ansett owned Kendell Airlines. Tony Mathews has been at the helm of Southern since 1986. His role in building a viable commuter carrier from an awkward privately owned enterprise has been instrumental, and reflects his objective opinion on the regional and commuter aviation sector in Australia as the former Chairman of the Regional Airlines Association of Australia.
Operational History
The airline commenced operations as Murray Valley Airlines in 1981, operating two Aero Commanders for six months before acquiring Cessna 402Cs. Murray Valley continued expanding until November 1984 when placed in receivership, with a vastly expanded fleet of Bandeirante, Shorts 330 and 360 aircraft. MVA operated for a further nine months under a receiver manager to enable services to be maintained to the local community, which at that time included Mildura to Broken Hill, Adelaide and Melbourne.
