Ansett New Zealand is adopting a modified version of Ansett Australia’s new corporate colours, differing only in featuring the four star southern cross, NZ flag and Ansett New Zealand titles. The aircraft's interiors are also being changed to feature new seat covers and carpets to compliment the strong blue colours on the outside. Other Ansett New Zealand news sees Ansett Australia BAe 146-300 VH-EWG transferred across the Tasman to become ZK-NZM ‘Queenstown’. Air New Zealand Set For Record Profits, Capacity Growth
Analysts at Henry Hay McIntosh have predicted that Air New Zealand’s after tax profit will jump to as high as $NZ245m for the 12 months to June 30 this year (up from the previous result of $NZ190.5m), based in part on the carrier’s strong traffic growth on a number of key routes. Henry Hay McIntosh analyst Rob Bode said a number of factors are pointing to a significantly more profitable year, including a 14% increase in inbound tourism to New Zealand, in an environment of less competition. Mr Bode also predicted that the airline would increase its international capacity by more than 20% this financial year. Since last June Air New Zealand has commenced services to Kansai and thrice weekly direct Sydney/Los Angeles services and added extra services to South Korea and Taiwan. Further Air New Zealand expects to add a fifth weekly service between London and Auckland and two extra services between Sydney and LA per week. At the time of writing the New Zealand and UK governments were to hold discussions on the country’s bilateral agreement. Air New Zealand wants to increase capacity on the Auckland/London route to cope with an almost 20% growth in visitor numbers from the UK but is constrained by the limits of the current bilateral agreement. Currently Air New Zealand flies between the two countries four times per week and British Airways three times. Air New Zealand says that for the year ending September that its passenger numbers on the route grew 19%. Air New Zealand is also investigating the possibility of a New Zealand/Shanghai service. If such a service is added its likely that Air New Zealand would also add Brisbane/Shanghai flights. To cope with the expanded long haul international services ANZ added a fourth leased Boeing 747-400 in November last year and has recently leased a fifth from ILFC to cope with the extra planned frequency increases to London and LA. It is planned that this aircraft will enter service around Easter. To cater for the increased fleet size and aircraft utilisation rates, Air New Zealand’s aircrew training programme is now running at full capacity. ANZ’s international division currently employs over 580 pilots, of which 50 are under training. A further 30 will be added this year. The airline also contracted 20 Britannia Airways pilots (eight Captains and 12 First Officers) to fly 767 services from Auckland to Brisbane, Apia and Seoul over the New Year peak period between December and February.
Air Caledonie Increases Services
Air Caledonie International has received French Government approval to operate a weekly Noumea/Auckland/Papeete (Tahiti) service following Air France’s withdrawal from this route last October, reports Peter Clark. Air Caledonie operated the first flight on January 10 with a return flight operating the following day. These flights operate with a dry leased AOM French Airlines DC-10-30 manned by Air Caledonie crew. AOM operates a service from France via Asia to New Caledonia. Air Caledonie will continue operating its current Boeing 737-300 services.
