Very Big Changes to Sydney International Airport Vhf Frequencies Are in the Air, Changes Which Will Be Ongoing

Very big changes to Sydney International Airport VHF frequencies are in the air, changes which will be ongoing. Many new frequencies have been added, with some existing ones disappearing. And some stations have changed hands! It’s all to do with both the newly opened “third” runway, 16L/34R, and also the handing over of responsibilities to both Melbourne and Brisbane Control of many of the Airways Control frequencies, to the north, south, and east and west of Sydney. The changes are not yet chronicled (at the time of writing) in ERSA (Enroute Supplement Australia), but we have locked onto them and now provide as many of the new channels and reallocated old channels as we are aware of.

Old TWR frequency 120.5, retained, and new TWR frequency 124.7 added. There are now two Tower frequencies for Sydney Airport. Monitors all over western Sydney state that reception at their homes is much better than it used to be on 120.5 in the past. Departures freq 125.3 is gone, replaced with 129.7. This frequency covers aircraft departing south, southeast and southwest. Northern, northeast, northwest Departures freq 123.0 remains intact. Approach freq 126.1 is now missing, replaced by 128.3 MHz. Old ATIS frequency 127.6 is now replaced by 133.8, and just below that, at 133.5 MHz, we have the new frequency now occupied by Melbourne Control, replacing the defunct Sydney Control frequency 131.3 MHz. Southern Control frequency 125.6 is now Melbourne Control, and Northern Control channels 126.9, 130.1, 130.9 are all occupied by Brisbane Control. Old Sydney Control frequency 128.6 is now Brisbane Control. This is the Sydney area Oceanic frequency for the north. Plans are in hand to hand off southern Oceanic and Arrivals Control frequency 123.4 to Melbourne Control at the time of writing. At this time, we have heard nothing about the fate of 129.8 MHz, northern Oceanic and Arrivals Control frequency, but guesses are it will be Brisbane Control by the time you get to read this.
