Skyrace Tasmania 95

The third week of February was a big week for both Tasmania and air racing enthusiasts with the start of the now annual Skyrace Tasmania Air Races. Starting with a navigation event, the action then moved to Valleyfield, a restored Wwii airstrip 40km south of Launceston. There the ground and sky seemed to pulsate to the throb of aero engines as the entrants tested their aircraft and fine-tuned their racing skills in the days leading up to the finals on Sunday, February 19.

The day’s racing started with the T-6 class. The race had just commenced when Doug Hamilton in his T-6, Vh-Hvd, came down the main straight and startled spectators when two distinct puffs of smoke were seen to have come from his machine. Hamilton continued flying and in the ensuing six-lap event gave Mike Falls a good run for the prize money of $22,000. Mike took out line honours in Vh-Ovo for the second year in a row. Third place was taken by Guy Bourke in Doug Hamilton’s second T-6, Vh-Xnz. Bill Waterton was tail-end charlie in Vh-Usr.
