Industry Reaping Rewards on Nulka and Lads

Australian industry is starting to reap rewards from the development of two long standing Defence science inspired inventions which, apart from having applications with the Royal Australian Navy, will bring contracts from overseas. These RAN projects are known as Nulka, the active missile decoy system, and LADS, the laser airborne depth sounder which is dramatically speeding up the charting of Australian waters.

The first LADS system, which is flown in a Fokker F27, has been based in North Queensland since the system was declared operational in February 1993. A contract has been signed with the United States Navy to build a laser platform, and trial the system. A demonstration, judged to be highly successful, has also been carried out on a CN-235 aircraft in Indonesia.
