Caloundra based Skyfox Aviation has announced a tricycle undercarriage development of its popular CA-25. Named the CA-25N Gazelle, the first tri-gear aircraft is due to fly early in the new year. Skyfox anticipates that the CA-25N will expand the CA-25's market base considerably, appealing to training schools as a Cessna 150 replacement, and to private owners used to flying tricycle undercarriage aircraft. Development of the Gazelle is well advanced with R&D work now virtually complete, and the first production aircraft has been sold to a customer in Switzerland. The current scrutiny of the CAA’s affairs have seen to that. And as our skies become ever busier, the subject is unlikely to go away. Ironically, a major problem for today’s air safety administrators (not to mention the bureaucrats whose task it is to justify the expenditure), is the sheer effectiveness of safety measures progressively introduced in the past. The western world’s vast number of day-to-day airline flights have in fact become so generally uneventful that officialdom can be tempted to think that some of the costly airways infrastructure set in place as a result of hard experience may no longer be necessary. This is particularly so in Australia, where we have been spared the horror of a major airline accident for over a quarter of a century. Air Disaster, Volume 1, a gripping, authoritatively researched account of 18 seminal international airline accidents by which the jet age of airline travel was refined, provides an effective antidote to this form of complacency. Compiled by aviation writer, pilot and air safety specialist Macarthur Job, the book’s lucid and entertaining style puts the reader on the flightdeck as the various accident sequences progressively but subtly unfold to the point of inevitability. Again and again, the reader is unable to avoid “if only” anguish in contemplating the seemingly minor factors which, had they been recognised at the time, could have tipped the balance from tragedy to safety. The 60 plus illustrations specially created by artist Matthew Tesch, himself a pilot, add a visual dimension to the graphic narrative, interpreting technicalities and aerodynamics to enhance the reader’s understanding of the what, how and why of the events described. Recommended reading for all whose judgements in any way affect air safety – in the air or on the ground. Volume 2 is keenly awaited.
