Kansai Opening Amidst Controversy to Usher in a New Era in Japanese Air Transport
Situated on a man-made island in Osaka Bay, Japan’s newest gateway and first round-the-clock airport is scheduled to open this September at a total cost of more than $15 billion. Expected to handle 68,000 passengers per day, Kansai will radically alter long-term international traffic patterns into central Japan and has significant potential implications for Australia, reports Paul Caldwell.
The all-new Kansai International Airport, scheduled to open this September, is the world’s first offshore airport and Japan’s first full-scale 24-hour airport. In the last decade, growth in air traffic in and through Japan has accelerated rapidly. Kansai International Airport was conceived to relieve the burden on the country’s two primary international airports, the New Tokyo International Airport at Narita and the ‘old’ Osaka International Airport.
