Choppers Cut Crime Wave

A police helicopter swoop has rounded up 1,300 criminals in only nine days in South Africa. The purge in crime-racked Johannesburg netted armed robbers, house breakers, car thieves and murderers as eight Puma machines and modified Bell helicopters, scoured South Africa’s biggest city in a campaign code named operation Chopper.

South African Police foot and motor patrol units, guided by their airborne colleagues, pounced every few minutes on wrongdoers ranging from drunk drivers to vicious killers as the choppers whirled continuously over the area’s 4,000,000 population.
