50 Years Ago …

August 1 – Germany. Hitler issues Directive 17 – conduct of air and sea warfare against England. Operation Seelowe(Sealion), the invasion, is to be launched on September 15.

Britain. 10 Blenheim fighters of 236 Sqn escort 13 Blenheim IV bombers attacking Querqueville aerodrome at Cherbourg. P/O Bryan McDonoug!’1 in Blenheim N2774(ND-N) is shot down and killed while strafing the airfield. F/O Bill Moore’s section drives off a German fighter. F/Lt Dick Power assumes temporary command of the squadron. The Aussies are all from Melbourne, although McDonough was born in Ulverstone, Tasmania.
