Looking proud in its RAAF 'livery', VH-SLJ is now operating with service crews out of Amberley air base. SLJ is on a twelve-month contract from StillwellAviation and is operating in the photo reconnaissance role formerly undertaken by Canberra aircraft.

Super Cruise:
The USAF are to proceed with the development of an advanced cruise missile utilising stealth technology. Administered by the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA, the USAF equivalent of our ARDU) under the code name of Teal Dawn the competition will involve Lockheed, General Dynamics and Boeing. The latter two companies already built the ALCM and Tomahawk while Lockheed is responsible for the production of an advanced stealth technology fighter and reconnaissance aircraft. USAF has a requirement for up to 1500 of stealth missiles which will have greatly improved navigation capabilities, range in excess of 2000 nm and carry sophisticated ECM equipment to aid their penetration of hostile regions.
Son of Tornado:
The British Government’s decision to part-sponsor, to the tune of $88 million dollars, the development of a technology demonstrator of a new European Agile Combat Aircraft will go a long way to securing a replacement for the Phantom, Starfighter and Jaguar forces for England, West Germany and Italy. Headed by British Aerospace, the consortium of seven companies will be managed by Panavia, who is responsible for the Tornado programme. The ACA will make maximum use of composite materials, and Control Configured Vehicle (CCV) techniques in addition to using more powerful RB199 turbofans and advanced avionics and Foxhunter radar derived from the Tornado programme. Principal shareholders will be MBB, Aeritalia and BAe while the cranked arrow wing design will combine many features pioneered on the abortive BAe P-11O and MBB TKF-90 fighter designs.
