The first two of 14 McDonnell Douglas F-15J Eagles have been delivered to the Japanese Air Sell Defense Force at GIFU Air Base, Japan. McDonnell Douglas is manufacturing the 14 Eagles as part of the 100-aircraft Japanese program. Mitsubishi heavy industries, under a licence agreement with McDonnell Douglas will build the remaining 86 aircraft, US Air Force pilots ferried the F-15Js to Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, from the US, before delivering them to GIFU.

Grumman Wins FSW Competition
Grumman has won a worthwhile contract from the US Defence Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA, the US equivalent to our DSTO) to build and test fly a Forward Swept Wing (FSW) combat aircraft. The first flight will take place in 1983 and the aircraft will utilise F-16 landing gear and F-5G forward fuselage to reduce development costs. Power will be supplied by a single General Electric F404 of 16,000lb thrust while extensive use will be made of composite materials and Fly-By-Wire controls. The advantage of FSW is simply that a smaller airframe can perform a great mission spectrum through use of extended range capability owing to greatly reduced drag and manoeuvring limitations im- posed by conventional designs. Landing and takeoff speeds are also greatly reduced while the aircraft itself is virtually impossible to stall by current standards. High angles of attack can be flown while miniaturised electronics and avionics enable a future FSW fighter to have complete Beyond Visual Range capabilities currently shared only by such large aircraft as the Phantom, Eagle and Tomcat.
Pratts for Lavi:
Israel has selected the Pratt & Whitney PW1120, a 20,000lb thrust variant of the existing F100 turbofan for the proposed Lavi fighter. Lavi will fly in 1984 and become operational by 1987 and will eventually replace Israel’s large force of F-4E and A-4 Skyhawk inventory. The Lavi will be an all-weather day and night fighter bomber with sufficient growth potential to also satisfy a number of projected special purpose roles such as ECM, Wild Weasel and reconnaiss- ance.
