Just What the Doctor Ordered

Up until recently the problem of what to do about Naval aviation after the retirement of HMA-S Melbourne in 1985 has indeed been a perplexing one. It is no secret that a nation the size (economically) of Australia could not afford to purchase a viable flat top in the 30,000 tonne class and then stock it with the latest fixed wing combat aircraft. On the other hand a nation with 20,000 kilometres of naked coastline totally sur­ rounded by major oceans and thousands of miles from our primary alhes desperately needs a deployable seaborne avia­ tion capability to ensure its lines of trade are maintained.

Fortunately the problem has been solved in one fell swoop that looks tailor made for Australia.
