One of three Boeing 737 'Surveiller' aircraft on order for the AURI. The aircraft typically operates at 30,000 feet at around 425 kts which provides an observation window of some 290,000 km2 each hour of flight. The aircraft is equipped with SLAMMR units which are visible to the side and fore of the tailplane. Additionally, a nose-mounted Sperry radar can provide radar surveillance along a 200 nm swathe forward of the aircraft.

Indonesia is a nation of some 1400 islands stretching from the Malacca Straits to the border with Papua-New Guinea. Whereas the majority of the 160 million population is concentrated on the main islands of Java and Sumatra, there is a massive programme of transmigration underway to settle peasant farmers from Java and Sumatra in the more remote areas of the nation – such as the islands near Singapore (such as Riau), South China Sea islands (including Natuna Besar disputed with Vietnam) and Irian Jaya (West New Guinea).
There is a tradition of rebellion in Indonesia: there have been ten major rebellions since Indonesia became an independent nation. These rebellions have included Communist revolts (1948, 1965-68), Muslim fundamentalists (1946-60) and separatists (1956-61 in Sumatra, Sulawesi and Kalimantan, and 1962-3 and 1969-present in lrian Jaya, and 1975-present in East Timor). There have also been the predominantly overseas activities of Moluccan separatists as well as less well-known instances of resistance by regional groups opposed to domination by the Javanese (who make up 43% of the population). For many outer island peoples rule from Jakarta is still interpreted as Javanese domination.
The problem of maintaining security within this vast nation of islands and diverse cultures and peoples (there are twelve major linguistic/ethnic groups) has led the present Commander-in-Chief of the Indonesian armed forces (General Benny Murdani) to call for an increase in the military/police forces by 75,000 men to a force of 500,000.
