The Secret of Mustang's docile handling characteristics is the large wing and tailplane allowing plenty of control put even at extremely low airspeeds. A special motor-cycle-like nose fairing is also being designed tor future models of this aircraft.
Now This is Really Flying
The eight thousand hour commercial airline pilot looked reticent at first, almost as if somebody might see him actually ‘doing It’. Into the wind, throttle to the limits and away he went. The greatest problem we had ten minutes later when we finally convinced him to land was wiping the grin off his face!
The old man had survived Beaufighters in World War II, Meteors in Korea and in civvy street more than a decade in crop dusting, flying everything from Tigers to Beavers. He had given up flying as age took its toll but still wanted to keep his hand in the game he loved, flying. Only problem was that no matter how he went about it, it would still end up costing him at least forty dollars an hour; economically it just wasn’t on. His flying days sadly were over, and as he told us, so was a major part of his life. The old man strapped in almost self-consciously; should old men have more brains, he wondered. Into the air and once more the greatest problem with his flight was getting rid of a grin that was threatening to break his dentures. ‘I’ve done a lot . of things over a lot of years and that beats them all,’ was his summing up of the experience.
Both men had just flown their first ultralight.
