The Eagles Soar at Narromine
It’s funny how things get started in the aviation industry. For instance, for Klaus Breitkreutz, Ian Dolby and John Rowe, Narromine Soaring Centre began high on the cliffs overlook ing Sydney’s Long Reef.
Here, two men who had long ago given in to their love of flying, were indulging themselves in the gentle art of remote controlled flight. As their model gliders soared easily on the updrafts, the two “proxy” pilots struck up conversation. Small things at first. And over the weekend flights that followed, Klaus Breitkreutz and Ian Dolby discovered that there was a com mon goal – to soar with the eagles in a real sailplane! To glide in the wild blue from morning to dusk was all very well as a devil-may-care daydream, but there arose the problem of supporting spouses, as well as meeting the other demands that society tends to make on the old pocket nerves. The search for a practical compromise led the two enthusiasts to the idea of a gliding training centre – a professional venture that would also allow them to indulge their love of soaring.
However, setting up a training centre for gliding enthusiasts was a fairly daunting exercise in logistics, no matter how keen. you may be flying model sailplanes by manipulating radio waves.
